Maurice Eugene Bourne, was born in Montreal on September 22, 1918, the son of the late Charles and Helen Bourne. He attended Montreal High School, McGill University and later served in the Canadian Dental Corps. After Discharge from Military Service, Maurice resumed his education at McGill University, studying in the Faculty of Dentistry.
Dr. Maurice Bourne was reported to be the first Black dentist to set up practice in Montreal. He maintained his practice here for more than 35 years up to his death on January 5, 1986. He was a life-long member of Union United Church and served on many Committees and Boards. At the time of his death, Maurice was Chairman of the Board of Trustees.
He was a member of the Canadian Dental Association, Montreal Dental Clinic and also served as a Dental Consultant to the Sun Life Assurance Company.
Maurice was instrumental in setting up a Dental Clinic at the Negro Community Centre in the mid-fifties. He was also one of the charter members of the Montreal Negro Alumni Group (MNAG). After the Group disbanded, remaining funds were transferred to the Rev. Dr. Chas. Este Scholarship Fund.
Dr. Maurice Bourne was married to the late Lilian Sylvestra Adams, a Nurse, of Boston, Mass. for over 30 years. They had no children.
